Thinking this was a picture of childhood fun, my first thought upon seeing this was, "Wow, I'd like to climb that tower in the background." It shifted after reading the caption. It's a good way to get attention to an important message.

This is a powerful and beautiful photo. Powerful because of the implicit message, beautiful because of the kids and color and composition. Well done.

That is babyskylark in the picture. Although everyday she becomes less and less like a baby. I'm scared to think about how she will have changed the next time I see her!

Very powerful for sure! Yes, I am a LOVER of the mountains and things like this make me saddened...

It's all about the bling-bling. Greed at its finest. Take care and thanks for sharing. Have a great WW. :)

I admit I didn't follow your links, but why would you take your kids to a park near there if you think it's endangering their health?

frigga.... this isn't a park. It's Marsh Fork Elementary School's playground. The school sits at the bottom of a huge coal impoundment and toxic sludge dam that has had numerous violations against it. The governor of WV and the coal industry has done nothing to ensure the safety of the children attending this school.

I'm trying to bring awareness to this issue.

Thanks for the important information. It's good to remember that when some people say "Not in my backyard" that whatever it is they don't want has to go in someone's backyard--or schoolyard. Oh, the price of coal. . . I think about it every time I turn on a light.

Wow. What an enterprise to mine this fuel!

(I see by your blogger photo you play the dulcimer. My daughter loves that instrument, though her experience has been limited to Kindermusik.)

Great WW entry! As dramatic as the topic can be, I like the way the photo was taken.

Thanks for visiting!
Happy WW! :-)

Thanks for bringing this issue up. It is really heartbreaking to me that such beauty -- of the mountains and of children's innocent playing -- are in danger thanks to man's folly.

Oh when will they ever learn?

Hey! As promised I've got a few pictures of Motherskylark's kids up on my blog. Hope you enjoy them and they don't make you miss them too much...

Red alert. Great juxtaposition. I am seeing red about it.

I left the peanut butter ball recipe for you yesterday on LL.

hey blue, i am glad that the pic brought you warm memories...and i too wish we were closer....not just the wanderlust , even the issues u bring up here are the kinds that would touch me.

i really hope something comes about your efforts and those of several others trying to fight a system that's unjust .
