Do you know where your eggs come from?

In my college Ecology class, back in the mid 90's, I discovered the horrors of factory farms. Before that, I had a picturesque view of where my meat and eggs came from: cows lazing about in fields and chickens roaming around looking for worms, just like on the farm I grew up on. I was so horrified at getting an inside look at factory farms that I switched to vegetarianism.

When I got married, I conceded to eating meat again, but I wanted to be assured of where it was coming from. Unless you shop in a Whole Foods/Organic store or buy off of a local farmer, the meat, dairy, and egg products you are consuming most likely come from animals that have lived a miserable life. To find out more about Wegman's Cruelty and urge them to let their hens be free-range, go here. This link also provides information on egg guidelines and making sure you are buying true Cage-free eggs. Another good link is Local Harvest, which can guide you to family farms near where you live.

So next time you are at the grocery store, send a message and buy Cage-Free Eggs!

I agree totally. When I learned about factory farms, also in college, my eating was forever changed. It's cage-free and organic all the way for me.

Ouch!!! I was a vegetarian for first 19 years of my life...and now I am not....I keep pushing the guilt away whenever it surfaces ..but yeah if I am eating animals and animal produce, i can be more conscious of its origins.....thanks for bringing it up, Blue.

I agree, completely horrific. When I really started learning about all this a few years ago, my purchasing and eating habits altered as a result. Can't be too informed, can we?

Even though I pay more for my groceries, most of my shopping is done at the local co-op which is member owned, supports local growers, is all-organic and sells only cruelty-free animal products.

Too bad so much of the country either doesn't know or doesn't care to know. Ugh.

Thanks for posting.

I tried vegetarianism too but it was not a good match for me because it was too high in carbs and low in complete protein, unless I wanted to eat cheese at every meal. Eggs are my favorite food. I get mine locally from my friends Ed and Randye. Last time I paid them my bill was over $200 (that was for about 9 months)! Some of their eggs are green. I hate what they do to most meat. Chickens might be the worst. There is some question about girls reaching puberty too fast due in part to the hormones in beef.

The best eggs I ever ate were from my Grandma'a and Grandpa's farm, where I'd sit and eat the eggs and listen to the chickens (that had just laid them) clucking outside. Their chickens led a pretty happy life, I think. But so many of the family farms like my Grandpa's are being bought out by the big corporations these days.

Hey Blue,

By now you must be sleeping peacefully after tucking Sirlaughsalot in :)

To answer your question, I am working on Health Care Quality Metrics in an Outpatient Setting. Since health care services are one of Florida's major "industries", research in Health care is big here ...my thesis is not as elaborate 'coz it's a part of Masters curriculum but I am working with my advisor to pave way for future work by a PhD student.

Meanwhile, despite hectic scheds I haven't given up on blogging completely..next week is gonna be busier so am saving my energies for it.....and remember your desire to see wildflowers in Fl ....they dont grow as much here but i did find some for you, finally ...drop by sometime to have a look :)
Good night, sleep tight and dream well :D
