Mountaintop Removal...

Dear Readers.....Please take the time to watch this video. It is a very important issue that affects us all, but especially those of us who live in the Appalachian region.

I cried when I watched this.... to see our beautiful mountains being destroyed. It makes me unspeakably sad. Mountaintop removal is literally changing the landscape of the Appalachians. It is a crime against nature and Creation in it's most literal and deep sense. So far, over 450 mountains have been destroyed and communities have been ravaged by the side-effects. Please go here to find out more and to see what you can do to help.

I remember the first time I saw a mountain "topped off" like that. You get a sense that something is terribly, terribly wrong. Thanks for showing this.

Thanks for letting me know about this. I'd never heard about mountaintop removal until moving to WV. As for the sludge rush of 2000 in the Big Sandy, I've never heard of that...AND I was living in KY at the time! Thanks again.

I don't cry as much as I get angry. I think it's criminal and people should be held accountable. Let me know if there are any protest activities etc. going on.

i will colleen. i'm contacting our governor and senator byrd...who's as old as the hills himselves and who's pockets are lined with much coal money. but i love what the speaker in the video says- that WV is not coal... it's beautiful mountains. the coal industry looks at the state as just a means to their end instead of as a beautiful national treasure to be respected and preserved.

I grew up in the shadow of a stripmined mountain. So I've had somewhat of a loathing of coal companies even before this. Even with this I have the upmost respect for miners. In fact if I had been born two generations earlier I'd be a miner myself along with my Pap and his brothers. Us short Italians fit the build.

But with this crap everyone looses out, with the exception of a small group of overpaid executives. I'm glad you put this out on your site.

Dear Amy, this is a great site. Thank you so much. I live in the area where the coal companies are destroying our homes, our water, our air and God's creation.
Not to mention America's children are being poisoned by mercury and have asthma from coal fired power plants.
There is no such thing as clean coal, there is only dirty politicians.
That coal has our blood on it.
