Blogging For the Mountains.........

A very exciting project is in the works, folks! As you all know, I am very passionate about putting an end to the destructive practice of Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining. I have to temper my posts about it, so that I don't drive all my readers away. :)

Well, in the process of blogging about MTR issues and action steps, I have connected with some other bloggers who are spreading the word, including Denny, over at Backwoods Drifter. He is just as passionate about ending MTR as I am, and some lively discussions have been going on over at his site.

In the same conundrum as I about the topic being somewhat all-consuming, he is beginning a blog entirely devoted to MTR awareness, issues, and action steps and has invited me to be a contributing author, along with another blogger. The link is in my sidebar: 'Stop Mountaintop Removal Blog'. I invite you to stop over and tell Denny 'Hi', and continue to check in regularly to see what is going on in the fight against the destruction of our mountains. I am sure more lively discussions will be happening and I am excited that the word is spreading and people are uniting against this atrocity.

"A strand of three cords is not easily broken....."

(Oh, and just a side-note... to get an idea about how bad the Coal propaganda is in our mountains, go to This post by Denny. It's about these ridiculous commercials that Walker Machinery (which supplies the big machinery for MTR sites) has out. )

This is so great, Blue! I got little pinpricks on my arms as I read because I knew this was so perfect for you to be asked to be a part of. It will be great to check out the conversations over on that other blog. Congratulations!

While I disagree with your cause I do think it's a beautiful picture.

My, those commercials are insane! That's such blasphemy and I can't believe that something so transparent would even be made. I'd love not to need electricity in my home (like Mr. Bug, that they interview) and give me some time and I won't.

i agree with you, brandy. in one they show a re-claimed mtr site, and there is NO way it could be a reclaimed site because there are full grown trees on it. it's blatant lying....

I didn't view the clip yet, and I'm so glad you're taking this to the next level. As for full-grown trees, it could be true. Some reclaimed sites have them, if the company left the soil loose enough. (See the book Lost Mountain for info). Maybe this still doesn't fit with the clip... I'll go view it.

Okay, I went and watched. I think the question is not so much whether the land can be reclaimed but whether THIS particular company has a reputation for adequate reclamation and disposal of wastes. Many don't but some do.

l.l.... walker machinery isn't responsible for the reclamation. they are a division of Caterpillar machinery and just sell the big equipment to the coal companies for their strip mine sites. so they have stakes in the fight against MTR.... i.e. losing business. that's why they have put the commercials out.

Thanks for the info. I have been to many different parts of Appalachia and my family is actually from there. I am looking forward to hearing what you and Denny are doing. I am on my way over to Denny's site now.
Thanks again!
